Hauntings
“ Keep the past alive." They are a distinctive kind of memory often tied directly to a physical space. Places retain the memory of things that happen in them. The liminal space suggested in my following work may take the form of haunted panoramas of institutional and domestic rooms, buildings or other edifices; spaces that retain boundaries yet command interactions between life and death, past and present.
In the Wake
Our courses are driven by the many great calamities our ancestors faced and how they dealt with them. Though we have new challenges to face we are left in the wake of the decisions and actions of our forefathers. The enduring effects of war on environmental, cultural and psychological identity are present in our lives. Oliver Stone in The Untold History of the United States claims, “…people everywhere, are in thrall to their visions of the past, rarely realizing the extent to which their understanding of history shapes behavior in the here and now. Historical understanding defines people’s very sense of what is thinkable and achievable.” Beauty can rise from ashes if we are knowledgeable about our past, in tune with our present and in turn create a better future. Echkart Toole states, “you create a good future by creating a good present.” Now is the time.
